Papers

Papers are documents that show evidence of the life of an individual or a family. These are usually unpublished and are often one of a kind. They may include legal records, letters, greeting cards, and certificates. They can also include ephemera, which is often a memento of a memorable experience, although it’s outlived its first purpose. Programs, ticket stubs, and newspaper clippings come to mind.

Pictures

A Picture is any image, generally, without words, that tells a story. They can be photographs and paintings, printed or digital. Pictures include films, negatives, and transparent slides. You may have suitcases or boxes filled to the brim with pictures that you don’t know how or don’t have the time to organize or access for your family or your phone might be filled with images. Whatever you have can be arranged, saved, and shared.

Heirlooms

Heirlooms are valuable objects that belong to a family for more than the current generation. Gifts from dear friends or grandparents, collections, and other memorabilia often become heirlooms. What do you have that once belonged to an ancestor? What do you want to send along to the next generation? Heirlooms are a great way to be remembered past your life. So let’s preserve those items.

My Process for managing your memories

Gather all your papers, pictures, and heirlooms in one place.

Sort items into four groups. Things necessary to your life right now; current bills and donation receipts come immediately to mind. Next, articles that are no longer actively needed but required for legal or personal reasons, such as ten years’ tax records. Third would be items not needed but wanted, such as photos of your ancestors and children. The fourth group would be items that are not useful or wanted. I encourage you to donate, sell, or destroy things without value.

Make arrangements for donations or sales.

Scan all photos and documents.

Organize paper and digital items. Where appropriate, archive all hard copies in acid-free archival containers.

Share by entering into the cloud using FOREVER® as appropriate.

Your memories will be ready to be enjoyed, and all your concerns about sharing your story will be gone.

Lifetime of Memories Not Lost with Time

I come from a very large, diverse, and complicated family. So when my mother and aunt passed away, we were left with scattered boxes of photos, documents, and ephemera. Their passing made us—our generation—realize how important it was to guarantee that their lifetimes of memories would not be lost with time. Cyndi DeBock took all these materials and organized them into an online family history project that not only saved those precious memories from obscurity, but also made them accessible to the latest generations of our family. Over and over, we keep hearing from the younger branches of the family “I had no idea….” Thanks to Cyndi, now they do.
